Sometimes we have to "fight" for what we want, and that leads to certain types of petition. Sometimes we seek government authorization for certain activities, and that requires a different type of petition.
Petitions are a means by which one person or many or a whole community can seek to change the status quo. Much of early legislation in our country is a result of petitions.
The Crown was also petitioned by individuals seeking redress to issues, challenges (too far to the nearest courthouse), taxation (the crushing level of), and more.
