Israel Blackburn: Soldier, Settler and Village Founder
Part of Black History Month (Senoir Social)
Thursday, February 04
12:00pm - 1:00pm
For more than a century after his passing, Israel Larry Blackburn’s story was forgotten. Local genealogists and historians have mobilized to bring his name and legacy back to life.
In the mid-1800s, a man named Israel “Larry” Blackburn made a journey few could have imagined—one that began in slavery in Kentucky and ended in Downers Grove, Illinois, where he became one of the village’s early founders. Born into bondage, Blackburn’s life reflects endurance, service and a lasting civic legacy.
Marty Acks, president of the Downers Grove Historical Society will present the enduring story of one man's perseverance, service and belonging looms large in the heart of the Downers Grove community.
